Snorkel Hockey: Boost Your Game with Simple Gear and Tips

Ever tried playing hockey while breathing through a snorkel? It sounds odd, but the idea is simple – improve breath control, stamina and focus on the ice or field. Below you’ll find the basics, the gear you really need, and a couple of drills you can start today.

What is snorkel hockey?

Snorkel hockey is a training method where players wear a lightweight snorkel tube during practice. The tube forces you to take deeper breaths and keep a steady rhythm, which translates into better on‑court endurance. It’s not a full‑game rule set, just a way to make ordinary drills harder and more rewarding.

Coaches use it to push players out of their comfort zone. You keep moving, handling the stick, and staying aware of the ball or puck while your lungs work a little harder. The result? Longer shifts, fewer fatigue breaks, and a sharper mind when the game gets intense.

Gear essentials & easy drills

First, pick a snorkel that fits snugly but doesn’t choke you. Most adult swimming snorkels work fine – look for a silicone mouthpiece and a short, flexible tube. You’ll also want a helmet that can accommodate the tube without slipping.

Next, set up a simple drill: continuous passing. Pair up, stand about 10 metres apart, and pass the ball or puck back and forth while both wear snorkels. Keep the pace steady; if you start gasping, slow down a beat, then speed up again. Do this for 5‑minute intervals, rest, then repeat.

Another good one is the rondo with a twist. Form a circle of four players, one in the middle. The outer players pass around while the middle player tries to intercept. Everyone wears snorkels, so the game feels tighter and you’ll notice who can think quickly under breath pressure.

Both drills work on stamina, decision‑making, and teamwork. After a week, you’ll likely notice you can stay on the ice longer without feeling winded.

Remember to stay safe: if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, remove the snorkel immediately. The goal is to challenge, not to risk injury.

Give snorkel hockey a try at your next training session. It’s cheap, easy to set up, and adds a fresh twist to ordinary practice. Soon you’ll be breathing easier, moving faster, and playing smarter.

What is underwater hockey?

Underwater hockey is a sport that is played in a pool with two teams. The objective is to get the puck into the opposing team's goal. It is played with two sticks and no protective gear. Participants wear fins, snorkels, and masks to move around in the water. The game is played with a 3-pound puck on the bottom of the pool. The game is fast-paced and requires a combination of skill, speed, and endurance. Players must be able to hold their breath while playing and must learn how to maneuver the puck around obstacles.
